Friday News 2/17-2/21

We are getting excited for our Week of Reading next week! Most students have picked out a book for Character Parade so that they can work on their costume this weekend. Please remember that all students need to come dressed as a favorite character and bring the book to school on Tuesday.

Here is a reminder about the rest of the week:

Monday - bring a stuffed animal
Tuesday - Dress as a favorite book character. Our Character Parade will be at 8:45am. Parents are welcome to come and watch.
Wednesday - Sports Day
Thursday - Wear a shirt with words. We will also have our Family Reading Night from 5:00-6:00 starting in the cafeteria.
Friday - Pajama Day

Here is a look at our week:

Reading: We started learning about Main Idea which is what a story is mostly about. We read several short stories and worked together to find the main idea.

Writing: We continued working on our letters. This week we focused on adding more details to the reasons that support our opinion.

Math: We started learning about graphs! We made several picture graphs and bar graphs and worked together to analyze them.















Bible: We are continuing to learn about Jesus' miracles. This week we learned how Jesus walked on the water and how He healed a man who was born blind.

2. We are working hard to keep each other healthy at school by washing our hands frequently and being careful when we cough our sneeze. Please encourage your child to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds (singing Happy Birthday song twice).

Friday News 2/3-2/7

Here's a look at our week:

Reading: We finished learning about cause and effect. We also learned about facts and opinions. We learned that a fact is something that is always true and an opinion is what you think or feel about something.

Writing: We learned how to identify character traits. We identified character traits about ourselves and wrote evidence. We also wrote our first opinion letters about book characters.

Math: We continued learning how to subtract three digit numbers.

Kid City: This week we learned about the City Hall. We practiced applying for an ID Card and a Health Card.

Important Information:

1. Monthly Bible Verse: See what amazing love the Father has given us! Because of it, we are called children of God. 1 John 3:1

2. We have a few holidays coming up. This next Tuesday (11th) and the next Monday (17th) will be holidays. We will still have school this coming Monday (10th).

3. Valentine's Day is coming on Friday, February 14th. We will have a little party in class at the end of the day. If your student would like to bring Valentines to pass out to the class that would be great, but please make sure they have one for everyone in the class.

4. The week of February 24th-28th will be our Elementary Week of Reading. On Tuesday we will have our annual Character Parade. On this day we ask students to dress up as one of their favorite book characters and bring that book to school with them. The K-2nd classes will then take a walk around the school to celebrate reading! Here is the schedule for the week:

Monday: Bring a stuffed animal to school

Tuesday: Dress like a book character (K-2nd Character Parade at 8:30)

Wednesday: Olympic Day - wear athletic clothes

Thursday: Wear a shirt with words on it

Friday: Pajama Day

Friday News 1/27-1/31

We had a bit of a crazy week in 2nd grade with sickness going around. Thankfully we made it to the end of the week! Please rest up this weekend and I look forward to seeing you all on Monday. Here are a few announcements:

1. Monthly Bible Verse: See what amazing love the Father has given us! Because of it, we are called children of God. 1 John 3:1

2. On Tuesday, February 11th we will have no school for students. Please make sure to mark this on your calendar. We will have regular school on Monday and the rest of the week.

Friday News 1/20-1/24

Here's a look at our week:

Reading: This week we started learning about Cause and Effect!




Writing: We started our new unit on Letter Writing! We learned the five different parts of a letter and practiced adding commas in the right places.

Math: We reviewed two-digit subtraction and started learning about three-digit subtraction.

Bible: This week we learned about compassion and mercy. We learned two parables that Jesus told and thought of ways that we could show mercy and compassion to others.

Social Studies: For Social Studies this quarter we will be learning all about communities and the people who work in them! This week we learned what a community is. We also learned about the three types of communities: urban, suburban, and rural.

Friday News 1/13 - 1/17

Thanks to all the parents who came to join us for Kite Day and Parent Observation Day on Monday! Here are some pictures from our day:

















Reading: This week we finished learning how to Draw Conclusions. We read several books and figured out what the author was telling us through the pictures.



Writing: We finished our poetry unit and published our last poem!

Math: We finished learning how to add three digit numbers!

Bible: This week we learned about Daniel and his friends. We learned that they did what was right even if it was hard. They followed God's commandments even when others around them didn't.

2. The week of 1/21-1/24 will be OCSI's Spirit Week. The High School and Middle School has invited all Elementary Students to participate. This is not mandatory, but if your student would like to dress up they are welcome to do so. Here are the days:

Friday News 1/6-1/10

We had a great first week back at school! Here's a look at what we did:

Reading: We started learning how to draw conclusions. We looked at different clues and tried to guess what they were describing. We also read some stories and used the pictures to help us better understand what the author was trying to say.

Writing: We continued writing poems. We learned how to add repetition to our poems and how to write a poem from a different point of view.



Math: We are reviewing our addition skills and learning how to add 3 digit numbers!






Bible: We learned about Queen Esther and how God used her to save the Jewish people from Haman's evil plan.

Important Information:

1. Monthly Bible Verse: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

2. Next Monday is Kite Day and Parent Observation Day! You are welcome to come and visit our class from 9:00-10:30 on Monday and see what we do during our morning time. We will also be flying kites outside from 9:30-10:00 out on the big soccer field. Please send a kite to school with your child for this time. If you are free to come and fly a kite with your student I am sure they would love it!

3. Today I sent home information about the website that goes with our Math book. This website has games, explanation videos, and other resources that go with the Math book we use in class.

Friday News 12/2-12/6

Here's a look at our week:

Reading: We continued learning how to Make Connections while reading. We learned how to make Text-to-Text connections and Text-to-World connections.

Writing: We continued writing poems. We learned how to take a big feeling and turn it into a small moment poem. We also learned how to edit our spelling by using the dictionary.

Math: We finished learning about two-digit subtraction. We also learned how to solve two-step word problems.

Social Studies: This week we learned about Europe. We went on a scavenger hunt to learn about different interesting buildings and the culture of Europe.






Bible: We started learning the Christmas Story. We learned about the birth of John the Baptist. We also learned how the angel visited Mary and Joseph to tell them that they would be the parents of Jesus, the One who would save His people from their sins.

Important Information:

1. Monthly Bible Verse: The Word became a human being. He made his home with us. We have seen his glory. John 1:14

2. We will have our class Christmas Party on Tuesday, December 17th. This year we are asking that students bring a snack or dessert to share with the class. I will provide drinks. It should be a great time!

3. Our Christmas Program is coming soon! It will be on Wednesday, December 18. This day is also an early dismissal day with school ending at 12:30. On this day there will be no lunch. We are also asking that students DO NOT bring anything to school with them as we will be going to the Christmas Program.
