Friday News 12/2-12/6

Here's a look at our week:

Reading: We continued learning how to Make Connections while reading. We learned how to make Text-to-Text connections and Text-to-World connections.

Writing: We continued writing poems. We learned how to take a big feeling and turn it into a small moment poem. We also learned how to edit our spelling by using the dictionary.

Math: We finished learning about two-digit subtraction. We also learned how to solve two-step word problems.

Social Studies: This week we learned about Europe. We went on a scavenger hunt to learn about different interesting buildings and the culture of Europe.






Bible: We started learning the Christmas Story. We learned about the birth of John the Baptist. We also learned how the angel visited Mary and Joseph to tell them that they would be the parents of Jesus, the One who would save His people from their sins.

Important Information:

1. Monthly Bible Verse: The Word became a human being. He made his home with us. We have seen his glory. John 1:14

2. We will have our class Christmas Party on Tuesday, December 17th. This year we are asking that students bring a snack or dessert to share with the class. I will provide drinks. It should be a great time!

3. Our Christmas Program is coming soon! It will be on Wednesday, December 18. This day is also an early dismissal day with school ending at 12:30. On this day there will be no lunch. We are also asking that students DO NOT bring anything to school with them as we will be going to the Christmas Program.

Friday News 11/18-11/22

Here's a look at our week:

Reading: We learned about Making Connections while reading. We read several books and though of things in our own life that were like the story.

Writing: We started our second unit on Poetry! We learned how to look at objects closely to see what they make us think of.




Math: We are learning about 2 digit subtraction. First we used base-10 blocks to help us subtract. Then we learned how to borrow from the tens.




Bible: Our two Bible characters this week were Ezra and Nehemiah. We learned how the help rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and teach the people the law of God.

Important Information:

2. Our 1st and 2nd grade Harvest Day will be Wednesday, November 27th. We will be learning about Thanksgiving through different crafts and activities. We will also be having pie day! 3. Our Elementary Christmas Program is coming up on Wednesday December 18th. Because it is during the day this year we are sending home permissions slips for that day and our practice day at the hall. Please fill out the permission slip and return it to school as soon as possible.

Friday News 11/11-11/15

This week we started our full practices for the Christmas Program! We are excited to share this program with you on December 18th!


Here's a look at the rest of our week:

Reading: We finished learning how to summarize a story.

Writing: This week we edited and published our last personal narrative!




Math: We finished learning about two-digit addition and took our chapter 3 test.

Social Studies: We learned about Africa! We wrote in hieroglyphics and we played several games that come from Africa.












Bible: This week's story was about Elijah's contest with the prophets of Baal to see whose god was the true God. We learned that God is the true God who answers prayer.

Important Information:

2. The OCSI Holiday Market will be tomorrow from 10-2 in the gym.

Friday News 11/4-11/8

Here's a look at our week:

Reading: We learned how to summarize a story. We read some books and looked for the important parts so that we could tell the story again to a friend.

Writing: We finished writing our personal narratives! Next week we will edit and publish our stories.

Phonics: We learned about syllables. We practiced saying words and breaking them into different parts.















Math: We learned how to add three and four two-digit numbers together. We also worked on addition word problems.

Social Studies: We learned about Africa!

Important Information:

2. There is no school on Monday!

Friday News 10/28-11/1

Here's a look at our first week of 2nd Quarter:

Reading: We focused on making predictions. We used the clues from the pictures and the words to guess what would happen next.

Writing: We worked on our new personal narrative. We fixed our beginning and added more details to our stories.

Math: We practiced out 2-digit addition. We learned how to regroup the ones to the tens place.

Science: We finished learning about the pond habitat.

Bible: We learned all about David and how he became King of Israel. We learned that he had courage while fighting Goliath and also chose to do what was right even when it was hard.

2. Next Monday is Parent Teacher Conferences! I am excited to meet with all of you and share with you how your student is doing in 2nd grade.

3. This year for the Christmas Program we are ordering special t-shirts that we will all wear. On Thursday each student took home an envelope. We are asking parents to give 1000 yen toward the t-shirt. Please return the envelope with the money as soon as possible.

Friday News 10/21-10/25

We made it to the end of 1st quarter! Here's a look at our week:


Reading: This week we focused on the different parts of a sentence. We learned about nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Then we practiced writing complete sentences.





Writing: We started writing a new personal narrative. We chose our idea, planned out the parts, and started our writing.







Math: We finished our chapter on place value.


Science: We learned all about the pond habitat with Mrs. Lyons!



Bible: This week we learned about Ruth. We learned how she left her homeland to go with her mother-in-law to a new land. We saw that Ruth was brave, faithful, and hard working. We also learned how God took care of her.

Important Information:

1. Monthly Bible Verse: This is our last week for this verse. We will have a test on Friday.
