Here's a look at what we learned this week:

Reading: In Reading we focused on Retelling the story. We learned that when we retell a story we remember the characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end. We practiced as a class, with a partner, and then on our own. This week we also added Word Work to our Daily 5 Reading time!


Writing: This week we continued writing narrative stories about our own lives. We also focused on our capital letters and periods. We learned that we need a capital letter at the beginning of each sentence, for people's names, and for places.

Math: This week we learned that even numbers can be written as the sum of two equal numbers. We also worked on our word problem skills and finished learning about "Join" math problems. On Wednesday we reviewed for our chapter test by playing Jeopardy and then we took our Chapter Test on Friday.















Bible: In Bible we learned about the prophet Elijah and that God is the only true God. We also learned that God takes care of His people by providing for their needs.

2. Bible Memory Verse: "But you are the only true God. You are the only living God. You are the King who rules forever." Jeremiah 10:10

3. There will be No School on Monday, October 10th.

Toguchi Field Trip

We had great weather for our day at the beach! We enjoyed eating lunch together, playing at the playground, and swimming at the beach! Thank you to all the parents who were able to join us today!















Here's a look at our week:

Phonics: This week in Phonics we focused on the hard and soft sounds of c and g. We learned how to know which sound to use by looking at the letter that comes next.

Reading: In Reading we learned about our Word Work stations of Daily 5. We learned the expectations and rules of our Word Work time and also practiced all together with our different materials.  This week we also focused on Checking for Comprehension during our Read to Self time.















Writing: This week we published our first piece of writing!! We also continued working on our other narrative stories.

Math: In Math we learned how to use arrays to help us add. We also practiced identifying numbers as even or odd.

Bible: This week we learned about King David and King Solomon. We learned that King David loved and obeyed God. We also learned about King Solomon asking God to give him wisdom and that he used his wisdom to be a good king.

Science: On Tuesday we started Science class with Mr. Fox. For the next three weeks we will be learning about electricity!

1. Spelling: Next week will be a review week for Spelling. The words will be sent home on Monday.

2. Bible Memory Verse: "He is like a tree that is planted near a stream of water. It always bears fruit at the right time. Its leaves don't dry up." Psalm 1:3

Here's a look at what we learned this week!

Phonics: This week we focused on the sound k spelled c, k, and ck. We learned how to identify which way we should spell it based on the vowels around the k sound.


Reading: In Reading we focused on expanding our vocabulary by finding interesting words in our books. We practiced finding words we didn't know or that we wanted to add into our writing. Throughout the week, we read several fun books together and also practiced on our own. When we found an interesting word during our read aloud, we added it to our Class Word Collector.


Writing: This week we learned how to Peer Conference and Peer Edit our writing. During Peer Conferences we got together with a partner and read our story to them. Then they told us something we did well and asked us a question about our story. During Peer Editing time, we took our friend's story and helped them fix the spelling, capitals, periods, and any other mistakes. Next week we will publish our first story!















Math: In Math we learned about skip counting, equal groups, and patterns. We practiced skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. We also solved story problems that used equal groups.















Social Studies: This week we finished learning about Maps! For the last few weeks we have been working in groups to make our own map. This week we finished! Here are some pictures:















Bible: In Bible this week, we learned about how God saved His people from slavery in Egypt by sending 10 plagues. We also learned about the Judges and King Saul. We learned that God is more pleased when we obey Him than when we do things for Him. God wants us to obey Him above everything else.

Happy Friday! We had a great week of hard work and lots of learning! Here's a peek at what we did:

Reading: This week in reading we focused on Accuracy strategies. We learned what to do when are reading and come to a word that we don't know. We practiced stretching out each sound in the word and then putting them all together. Then we practiced asking ourselves if the word matched the pictures, sounded right, and made sense. This week we also continued to practice our Read to Self and Read to Someone and made it to 20 minutes!


Writing: In Writing we focused on making goals for the 1st quarter. We talked about how to make SMART goals and write specific steps that will help us reach our goal. Throughout the week each student picked a subject area and wrote their goal and steps to improve in that area.




Math: This week we continued to focus on our addition and subtraction. We also learned how to solve word problems in which in the end result is unknown. On Friday we took our Chapter 1 test.






Bible: In Bible we learned about Jacob and Joseph.  We learned that God was with them even in the hard times of their lives. In the same way that God took care of them, He will also take care of us.

2. Bible Memory Verse: "What pleases the Lord more? Burnt offerings and sacrifices, or obeying him? It is better to obey than to offer a sacrifice." 1 Samuel 15:22

3. We will have our 1st and 2nd grade Field Trip to Toguchi Beach next Friday from 10:30am-2:00pm. All students will need to have a home lunch on that day. If it is a rainy day on Friday, we will reschedule our trip to the 23rd.

4. Our Scholastic Book Order will be open until Friday, September 23rd. If you would like to order, you can do so online or send in the order form and US dollars with your student.

5. There will be no school on Monday, September 19th.

6. Picture Day will be Tuesday, September 20th.
